Food Drive on December 4-6, 2015
Sunset Foods in Highland Park is ready to make the holidays a little more festive for residents who are experiencing difficult times by helping to stock the Moraine Township Food Pantry.
Moraine Township and Sunset Foods in Highland Park will sponsor a special food drive to address growing food insecurity in the community. Food Pantry volunteers will be at the store December 4-6 asking shoppers to add $10, $25 or $50 to their bill as a contribution to Moraine Township’s Food Pantry. The store is located at 1812 Green Bay Road, Highland Park.
“We are very fortunate to have the significant ongoing support of Sunset Foods, which throughout its long history has been a leader in community service,” acknowledged Anne Flanigan Bassi, Moraine Township Supervisor.
Noted Sunset Foods Vice-President Frank Lomoro, “During just two days last year our generous and caring customers added over $8,000 to their grocery bills to purchase food for the Pantry. We value our partnership with the Township in its effort to help our hungry neighbors.”
Moraine Township Trustee Amy Zisook describes the current food insecurity problem by noting that “many residents are unaware that one out of every four elementary students in Highland Park and Highwood qualify for the federal free/reduced lunch program at their school, and use of the Moraine Township Food Pantry has increased significantly in recent years.”
Further, at an April community meeting to address hunger, Highland Park High School Principal Dr. Tom Koulentes told participants that “hunger touches all of the age and cultural demographics of our students and our community and no group is immune.”
The Pantry is open to income-qualified Moraine Township residents Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00-4:00pm at 777 Central Avenue, Highland Park, and other times by appointment.
